Ten years ago we were given Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone and this past weekend I was seated, like millions of others for the opening weekend for the last in the series of epic films that many of us have grown up alongside.

[Note to reader, movie spoilers].

If you haven’t read the books and haven’t seen the last movie yet and want to, I suggest you stop reading now!!!

The last of the 7 books was split into two films, “Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2″. The first of the parts came out last November and this being the climax of the series was bound to pull the audiences and it’s broke many records already in the first seven days of it’s opening. The biggest opening weekend takings ever, both in the UK and the US, knocking itself from the previous record holder in the UK and the 2009 Batman movie in the US from the top spots. So what pulled the crowd?

I’d say many factors pulled in the millions. Many of which are Harry Potter fans, through and through but summer block busters often pull in the big numbers.

So was it worth the hype?

ABSOLUTELY!!! Sure, I’m bias, but normally as a huge fan of the books, I rip the movies apart but honestly, everything they did in this edition to the series worked very well.

Obvious things like dialogue was different and certain scenes were missed, inevitably from the books but all in all, the flow and brilliance wasn’t lost.

Special Effects

The one part of this movie I was slightly nervous about was the Dragon scene when Harry, Hermione, Ron and Griphook break into bringots and try to get into Bellatrix’s vault to recover the horcrux. I feared this scene would be completely railroaded over but it was done in full and with great effects and superb acting. The cart scene, with Helena Bommen Carter playing Hermione playing Bellatrix was fabulous, races with Ron in disguise, Harry and Griphook under the invisibility cloak with another Gringots goblin go through the tunnels in the cart, fall under the magical waterfall to remove magical enchantments and are faced with the blinded Dragon. Inside the vault, the scene of piling gold takes place and they do indeed fly off on the back of a dragon.

All the effects in this final instalment are simply astounding. The war scene at Hogwarts lives up to all expectations. It can only say it was topped by the immense acting skills of all our familiar and loveable characters.

They were incensed with emotion, heartbreak and triumph that ricocheted from the screen into every viewers heart. Maybe, being a long life fan, I am bias, but many seemed touched in the cinemas about the final crusade by the trio and their friends.

Outstanding Performances

Its safe to Say, Dan, emma and Rupert gave their ultimate best and the true testament to the fact they’ve also grown up with the characters they’ve played. Some of my favourite moments did come from Neville LongBottom, Matthew Lewis, and Professor McGonagall, Maggie smith. But all cast and crew did an amazing and magical job giving the last movie in the Potter series the warmest goodbye possible.

Alan Reikman has played Snape so honestly wonderfully you can’t help but to love to hate him and his departure was done only how Reikman could do it. A softer side we’re not used to seeing in him truly came across during his final scenes and in some ways he became the hero too.

Ralph Fiennes, as always played Voldemort with the level of sinister we’ve come to only expect and our valiant villain is shocked to be defeated in the end.

Some true emotion and ties of humanity that we have glimpsed before but truly saw come to life on screen as they had in the pages of our books before. I’d go as far to say this was one of the best Harry Potter films in the series and I would highly recommend all Potter fans go and see it soon.
